Shown is the story of Prince Raja Pala and the nymphs. In the story there are seven nymphs, here we see excerpts of five of them. Raja Pala is hiding in the bushes on the right, holding a long stick in his hand. He is fascinated by the youngest nymph, Sulashi, and prevents her from flying away by using the stick to fish for Sulashi's magical clothes, which she has taken off for bathing. He promises to return the clothes to her if she gives birth to a child that is half human and half celestial. Sulashi agrees, gives birth to his son Durma, and years later is able to fly back to heaven.
The figure quite common and designed to please. Due to the high amount of work and the shown craftsmanship of the carver, this work nevertheless has a significant value in my collection. This type of carving is unlikely to be commonplace in Bali today.
The two-dimensional photo unfortunately cannot convey the high three-dimensional impression of the carving. The front plane stands almost completely free from the background, only with a few bars it is connected to it. Nevertheless, the carver managed to depict even the finest branches not only flat but also plastic on the back side. The sides of the relief are also open and completely carved, which increases the overall plastic impression for the viewer.
